Roslindale gets second coffeehouse, but this one has a beer and wine license

Update: The live music started tonight.
The Square Root opened today at Corinth Street and Belgrade Avenue, serving, for now, a limited menu of coffees and baked goods.
The place will gradually expand its menu to include craft beer and wine as it stays open until 1 a.m. with live night-time performances. The owners are also leasing the space above the coffeehouse for use as a co-working space.
The Square Root is a few blocks away from the Green T coffeehouse at South and Walter streets - and around the corner from the impending Distraction Brewing Co. brewery.

I'll be fascinated to see how this and the shaken fish place do
I hope both thrive but neither seems like an obvious fit for our somewhat quiet neighborhood. The fish place has a lot, lot of seats. Hope their costs are low because it doesn't feel like a take out business.
This coffee shop / bar is a cool addition but they must have spent so much money converting that space. My guess is they fold after a year but then another business can take advantage of all the money sunk into the renovation and will succeed.
I'll support them both as much as feasible of course.
Shaking Seafood
I was underwhelmed by a recent visit there with the in-laws.
I'm not a huge fan of the whole concept, but the food at this spot did not compare to the more well-known places I've been in Allston (Loui-Loui and Holly Crab, each of which I've visited once).
Market
I expect the foot traffic wanting a cup of good coffee across the street from a commuter rail station could be more than the foot traffic wanting a plate o shrimp in front of a bus stop.
The coffee shop part I get
Paying the bills to stay open until 1am seems like a tougher thing to pull off.
I noticed something with Roslindale's first (?) coffeehouse
When P.S. Gourmet first opened, they were open late. Slowly but surely they are facing the reality that late night coffee is not a thing and have scaled back a bit.
They could be viewing coffee as a jumping off point for the sale of other things (did I read beer?) or they are testing to see how the market goes. I wish them well regardless.

Somebody on Facebook asked me if PS wasn't a coffee shop. I answered:
In any case, at night, the Square Root will be having live music, which might bring in regular customers, rather than (the relatively non existent) foot traffic you'd expect at night.
I walked by there tonight
After 9 PM it was hopping. Opening night, but still, a good portend.
How does Fornax fit in the "coffee house" definition?

Fornax is great, but it looks like these guys are or at least should focus on the music thing. Roslindale is in dire need of something like that. The shaking crab place... well I'm not sure how that will pan out. Seems like a weird concept. at least for that location anyways. Either way I wish both well.

That's way the world works buddy, sorry if that's disappointing to you. Same deal over at the substation. We're getting a cool indoor beer garden space because someone else other than the brewery bought a white elephant.
I've been there to get a coffee there already - have you? Or you just want to only read nice words on the internet without actually supporting anything.

Is Turtle Swamp still in that space. Every time I peeked in there it was empty. Certainly a different vibe than Trillium.

turtle swamp seemed odd choice. their actual brewery is right up past forest hills, well within "convenient" from rozzie. the appeal of trillium is that it was significantly more convenient to head to than going to trillium's actual locations. also had the social media buzz to make it look like a fun time

Had a couple beers in there. Same vibe as last year and the beer was good too. Hope they keep bringing in seasonal beer gardens or finally get a real, full time restaurant in there.
Fish place has fancy sea
Fish place has fancy sea foods, not inviting atmosphere,large open space with ucky seating. No plain foods for restrictive diets. A bit pricey also. Lower the prices, get some designer for interior comfort, keep simple food availability for boring foodies that want a place to dine.
