Didnt their restaurant go belly up due to theft/bad mgmt?
Wonder if Barneys will outsource the restaurant ops to a local chef/group or keep it corporate?
Never heard that story. Sam's at Louis Boston was
a place I really liked and seemed successful. The team went and opened The Maiden in Southie (another place I liked, also since closed) in anticipation of the temporary Waterfront location of Louis and Sam's at Louis being replaced with a nearby new building that never happened.
Why Louis Boston closed is another kettle of fish. I'd call that a second-generation failure. Bad idea to move to the Waterfront when it did, among other problems.
Edited: ohhh, you mean the restaurant at the original Louis Boston location on Newbury Street. Indeed, that was allegedly a miserable failure of mismanagement and ultimately theft, including absconding with a small fortune in wine-cellar contents. Hard to believe no indictments followed. The perps are back in Boston working in the industry again, too.
And then came Restoration Hardware ...
Which got a liquor license and then never did much with it.
I believe Room & Board at
I believe Room & Board at Newbury and Mass. Ave. also has a liquor license which they do not use. This is especially a shame since the very reasonably priced Other Side Café, a delicious Indian restaurant and a yummy Thai restaurant got kicked out to make way for an expensive furniture chain-store which I never see any one shopping in...

There's a rule, but enforcement is spotty.

I miss all of the old department store restaurants...Filene’s, Lord and Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Jordan Marsh’s Bakery. Actually I think all the downtown department stores had a lunch counter at the very least, though we had our favorites and stayed with them. I loved the ordering system at Filene’s, where the waitress gave you an order slip and tiny golf pencil to write out your choices.
Even if Barney’s clothing is on the pricey side, a lunch there might be affordable for many! The current choices at Copley Place are few and far between...not much more than Legal Seafood.
P.S. the last time I checked, Barney’s sold very nice (read: exclusive) women’s clothing as well as men’s!
Frosty Corner
I had many a hot dog and ice cream at the Frosty Corner in Filene's Basement while my mother shopped.
Interesting
Many of the New York Dept stores still have cafes including Barneys and Saks...
Europe has it even better...Selfridges in London has multiple dining options (affordable and pricey) in addition to a food hall at ground level. It makes for a nice break while shopping/browsing or to meet up with friends, etc.
I think part of this is to help shoppers enjoy their visit to brick and mortar stores in our increasingly internet dominated world.

If you're the kind of customer who shops at Barney's,
you'll probably find this place affordable. For us mere mortals, the prices will likely be akin to lunch at Abe & Louie's down the block.

A childhood well spent
In that Flintstones episode, Fred and Barney bought a drive-in without telling Betty and Wilma. The two girls in the video phoned Fred and asked for a job. Fred had to pretend that it was someone else calling, as Wilma was right there in the room, so he referred to them with men's names. What were the male names that he used?
