Coffee to become slightly harder to find on Newbury Street
By adamg on Thu, 09/05/2019 - 9:23am
Meg McClaff alerts us that the Starbucks at 165 Newbury St., between Dartmouth and Exeter, will serve its last latte ever sometime before 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 - forcing its regulars to walk a whole two blocks to the one at 750 Boylston St., or, if that one becomes overloaded beyond endurance, a half mile to the one at 350 Newbury St. or the one at 443 Boylston St.

It's the end
"I've seen the end of the universe, and it happens to be in the United States and, oddly enough, it's in Houston, Texas. I know - I was shocked, too. Imagine my surprise when I left a comedy club one day and walked to the end of the block, and there on one corner was a Starbucks, and across the street from that Starbucks, in the exact same building as that Starbucks, there was - a Starbucks. I looked back and forth, thinking the sun was playing tricks with my eyes. That there was a Starbucks across from a Starbucks - and that, my friends, is the end of the universe."

"There's a Starbucks ...
where the Starbucks used to be."
- John Wesley Harding (aka Wes Stace)
Maybe
Maybe Nero or Tatte will step in to fill the void?
Local / regional shops closing
I don't mind seeing this Starbucks go, but between Great Barrington and Wired Puppy closing their doors this year, there are fewer good coffee options in the Newbury St area that aren't larger chains.
Thinking Cup on Newbury
Thinking Cup on Newbury between Berkeley and Clarendon is pretty good.
I'm a member of the Dunks generation...
Dunkies; the coffee of choice..
Milk or Cream?
Maybe Sugar?
A Dunkies in a basement space would be too cool.
it's ok, nobody is perfect
it's ok, nobody is perfect
But that's not all!
Don't forget 64 Arlington if all other aforementioned locations are now too swamped.
Reducing Starbucks redundancy
They also recently closed the two older Starbucks in Harvard Square (The Garage, originally a Coffee Connection, and Church Street), keeping just the big newish one in the center of the square.
Wonder if they will next close one of the two on Charles Street? One of them is also a former Coffee Connection.
flashback friday!
Coffee Connection! In college lo, these many years ago now, I worked at a bunch of the pushcarts in Faneuil Hall, and there was a CC in Quincy Market (where the Starbuck's is now) (of course). The crew got to know us cart folk and would just hand us our orders over the heads of the tourists when it was busy, let us run a tab for a few days. Lifesavers, especially on summer Saturdays. Seems like everyone who worked there was in a band, too, which was super cool.
Coffee Connection
Coffee Connection was ahead of it's time, the first store I can remember where you could get a really good cup of fresh brewed coffee. Used to get a cup before going over to the Brattle for matinees. They should have been what Starbucks is now.
Coffee Connection was ahead
.
IIRC, Starbucks bought out Coffee Connection, and took over the locations - Cambridge and Framingham at least. After the takeover, the staff said that Starbucks would be maintaining the CC coffee style in those locations. I’m fairly sure the words “Yeah, right” appeared in a thought bubble over my head at that point. I agree the CC buyout was a loss to hub coffee.
"Coffee"
Presence or absence of *$ has nothing to do with the availability of coffee. They sell dessert, and call it coffee.
I go there because the
I go there because the dessert they sell includes good hot chocolate, and they can be counted on to boil the water for tea.
My coffee-drinking partner goes to places that don't burn the beans. It turns out that "New England Roast" is coffee-trade jargon for the kind of light roast he likes, and for once something named after a place can be found in that place.
Pretty sure they sell plain black coffee too
Might not be your preferred style of roast, but it's a far cry from dessert.
It's undrinkable
Starbucks coffee by itself is undrinkable -- bitter, burnt, awful. That's why everyone who goes there loads it up with cream and sugar concoctions.
Everybody forgets the one on Dartmouth & Stuart.
Small space, very little seating, but fantastic crew.
