This weekend is your last chance to walk around Mount Auburn Cemetery

Mount Auburn Cemetery announced that it is closing to the public, effective this Monday, March 30. From that day forward, the gates will be open only from 4 to 6 pm, and only for the purpose of families visiting their loved ones' graves.

Adjoining Cambridge Cemetery is less scenic ....
... but may still accommodate people's needs to walk in a green and peaceful setting.

and then there's the Charles River, nearly a 1/4 mile from the rear of both of these, that provides a beautiful, scenic and almost endless PUBLIC area to stroll while still social distancing.
Getting pretty crowded
The river paths were crowded yesterday To the point that maintaining > 6 foot spacing was hard at times. I am trying to do my part by seeking out less crowded spots for my outdoor exercise...
Close Memorial Drive
Yeah, it's hard to avoid people on the river these days, but there's a lot of extra space in the form of a big road right next door that's pretty redundant during the current crisis. They already close part of Mem Drive on May-Nov Sundays, why not just keep the whole thing closed every day now?
They should never have ruined
They should never have ruined the river with that disgusting highway. Close it forever and dedicate it to the victims of this disease.

I take it you don't live in the neighborhood that has to deal with all the diverted traffic on Sundays.
Closing it to cars would definitely make it harder to drive in the area. But it wouldn't help non-car travel for comparable trips, unless they add bus routes or trolley lines from where all the cars are coming from. Most people walking and biking aren't coming from as far away.

Do you know what was along the river before Memorial Drive? Filthy, polluting industry. The road and parkland were a cleanup project.
I have a great-great-grandfather buried there.
Does that mean they'll let me in? :-(

I visited this afternoon
The entrance gate area was very busy this afternoon with cars and people, but once you get away from there, Mount Auburn is still a quiet and restful place to walk.
I have never seen their bike rack full before today. Some cyclists including me had to lock to the fence and gates because there was no room in the rack.

One of the reasons for the closing is that people were bringing dogs, which is not allowed, and dog ownes were letting their dogs run off-leash which is wildly disrespectful.

I was there on thursday late morning. Pretty empty. Only 2 other bikes on bike rack. Why cant they just close it on weekend??
Its a beautiful time of year with things blooming. Some of us live alone and need these spaces to feel like we can breathe and avoid depression.
Its also a nice place to walk with a friend and be able to walk far away from each other while still having conversation (because sidewalks are noisy with traffic).
This really makes me sad. After thursdsy i planned to go at least once a week. It restored my soul.
Was there today
There were a lot of people there, but once you got away from the popular spots (Washington tower, Bigelow Chapel, Willow Pond) it was easy to stay physically distant from folks. Easier than a lot of other places -- Fresh Pond, for instance.
