Cambridge Street in Sullivan Square in daylight perhaps not the best place and time to set off fireworks, man learns
A Somerville man police say was shooting off fireworks on the Cambridge Street bridge around 4 p.m. yesterday now faces drug and weapons charges after Transit Police officers nabbed him at the neighboring T station, two Roman candles "protruding from his person."
Transit Police report arresting Charles Sally, 34, around 4:15 p.m. at the Sullivan Square T station, just as he was about to board a bus:
Officers observed Roman Candles protruding from his person and asked to speak with him. Officers recovered fireworks and an illegal double edged knife from Sally . At this point Sally fled and the officers pursued ultimately stopping Sally on Spice Street in Charlestown.
During booking on charges for illegal possession of fireworks and illegal possession of a dangerous weapon, police say, officers found "what they believed to be illicit street narcotics," so they added a charge of illegal possession of a controlled substance. Also, it turned out that Sally is wanted out of Wrentham District Court on a warrant charging witness intimidation, police say.
Innocent, etc.

Is that a Roman Candle in your pocket?
Or are you just happy to see me?
Believe me ...
I was so tempted to use some variant of that for the headline, but, I don't know, two Roman candles just seemed a bit too much.
After further examination...
One Roman, one Sicilian.
Finally
One of these firework felons was caught in the act. Good work Transit Police.
This is a perfect example...
Break only one law at a time.
Extreme piercing?
Woah.
"...protruding from his person..."
I have an ER doc friend who has told me patients presenting with this sort of thing usually say it was due to a "slip and fall" type accident, roight.
Knife question
Under what circumstances is a "double edged knife" illegal? Does it have to do with the type of knife, the context, or what? Almost everybody who cooks owns kitchen knives (some rather large), and I also have various kinds of utility knives in my tool collection, and a fairly large single-edged "sportsman" (hunting) knife that I inherited... although the only knife I normally carry around is a tiny, tiny Swiss Army Knife on my keychain, and even that prevented me from entering a courthouse once... what are the rules? Are they by state, or city, or what? Anybody know?
Google it
Switchblades and daggers are illegal. Utility and kitchen knives are fine.
If you enter city hall with
If you enter city hall with your pocketknife, the police at the X-ray machine will pull out a ruler and measure the blade to make sure it's shorter than 2.5 inches. If longer, they confiscate it.
Courthouses too
I frequently enter courthouses for work. I usually have a multitool or two in my messenger bad that do not contain any knives, as I commute by bike. They often take it out and start measuring the tools, then talk amongst themselves and decide that screwdrivers and such are not knives. Or the X-ray person says "so do you have ALLEN WRENCHES in here?" and I'm like "yes" and they're like "why on earth would you..." and I gesture to how there's a helmet attached to my bag and cyclists usually have such things and then they're like "...oh"
I believe they're always illegal
My understanding is that Massachusetts has banned all double-edged weapons. I don't know of any double-edged kitchen knives.
Edit: If you're caught outside with a carving knife in your pants (or in your hand), that's illegal, too. Even though it's a kitchen knife.
Wait just one minute. I
Wait just one minute. I thought the fireworks users were all honor roll students celebrating after a day of charity work? Are you telling me that people illegally using fireworks are scumbag criminal losers? Next you will try to tell me the tooth fairy and the Bible are made up.
The Bible Is Made Up
There's not really a place called "Egypt".
May be partial explaination
May be partial explaination of why the fireworks I've heard in eastern half of Somerville up through Wednesday were before total nightfall
Out of all the torture people
Out of all the torture people have been going through and complaints by organized neighbors who have sounded off on NextDoor, and this guy is the only one who's face has been published? Shit, he isn't from my area. And don't get me wrong, Adam, I do appreciate your photos of the fireworks confiscated in my neighborhood and it has been quieter at night. Maybe the Powers are starting to actually listen to us.
Great Job MBTA POLICE
Great job to the MBTA police officers who apprehended this individual.
Honestly these officers could have overlook these Roman candles.
However understanding the times and knowing how unpopular unwarranted and a pain in the ass the fireworks have been, they decided to engage this person. And upon doing so discovered a host of other crimes.
Then officers have had to run after this jerk in 90 degree weather and apprehended him.
Great job.
