one evening, in the 90s, i heard that the space shuttle would be passing over boston and would be visible to the naked eye. i’d never heard of this before and i had two eyes so i figured why not check it out? i forget the exact time but it think it was flying over at 3 or 4 am. it was the middle of summer and a gorgeous night. i hopped on my bike and cruised to a spot in brookline i knew had a good view of the skyline. corey hill park. i was a little nervous because it was so late and out of my neighborhood but a young lady i knew took me to see the stars at the park once and i knew it would be the right place.

when i rolled up there was more activity than i expected. . as i rode up summit ave and approached the park i could see there was about a hundred other people there! everyone was just laying on the ground looking up and waiting. it was a very chill. i’d say it was like a dead show without the band if you know what i mean. eventually someone said “there it is!”

it flew across the sky from my right to my left. sorta from fenway park towards watertown. it looked like an airplane with slightly different lights not as impressive as i’d hoped. i will however never forget laying on the ground in a park, in brookline, in the middle of the night, with a bunch of weird strangers.

My dad took us to a dark place one October night in 1957, to watch Sputnik pass over. It was clearly visible, and as you can tell, seeing it made an impression.

I remember (vaguely but I do) my dad taking me to see Halley's Comet, and I wasn't quite 4. Hopefully I live long enough to see it again!

I may try to take my kids somewhere if the weather cooperates.

Why the f- do parks having closing hours in a free country

The city doesn't want to have to pay somebody to watch over parks when the only people using them are probably up to no good.

I think the argument is more like the city doesn't want to pay somebody to watch over parks to protect the people who do want to use them against people who want to rob/assault the first group.

Usually, the people who hang out at parks, in general, late at night, but especially during the wee hours of the morning (between one and four a. m.), are generally up to ill design--and, as you put it, perruptor--up to no good.

The park isn't free, it is funded by tax dollars.

I was there until nearly ten. Too many people and too little comet.

Now I had to demand Alexa play it to get rid of the earworm. Great tune.

Thanks!

If you don’t like public parks having closing hours, you’ll positively hate the fact that other public property owned by we the people is under even tighter restriction.

Take for example the runways at Logan Airport. Supposedly public property, but in order to use them you need all sorts of permits, and you need to schedule and coordinate your use and follow the rules of a complex bureaucracy. Try and have a simple picnic there with your family and see how the totalitarian anti-freedom thugs treat you.

Or what about Boston Common? Set up your tent? build a campfire? dig a latrine pit? No way!

And the roads supposedly belong to all of us, but the fascists have imposed all kinds of rules about driving only on the right side, mandatory stops in some places, speed limits.

Free country my ass, amIRight?

So that if people are doing something with dubious legality that might be hard to prove (which is certainly more likely to happen at night), they have an immediate alternative to charge them with: being in the park after close.

It also prevents people from living in the park. Lying down or napping in parks is all good, so how do you make it not ok to do overnight? Close the park.

I don't think park closure laws are necessarily meant to be followed, it's just the give the cities an option to kick people out if needed. Like the Esplanade closes after sunset and clearly that's not respected.

Lol I'm so naive. I was there tonight to try and see the comet and thought how cool it was that it was left open at it was so pleasant to be there with a bunch of folks on a hot summer night quietly hoping the haze would clear.

Well now I know it was only thanks to Neowise it was open. Was slightly jealous that Brookline had the nice things like a chill park you could spend time at after dark.

Great idea! Although I have to say for best results you need to get away from the city. I've tried seeing it locally with no luck, im thinking if driving up north on the next clear night.

As for parks. I get why they close when it's dark out but I've been rushed out if a few waterfront parks with my camera even before the sun went under the horizon. Technically the park closes at dusk but I think parks should adapt to their surroundings. That means opening until 11pm to let people star gaze or maybe letting the sky lose its color before closing off water access.

Thing is, stargazing around here kind of sucks unless you drive out to the Quabbin or up to NH. Nevertheless, out here in western suburbs I was able to find the comet last night but only using my crappy binoculars and it was very faint. Still not sure if there's a good, open, dark space with easy parking a short driving distance away.
