BAA cautiously sets Oct. 11 as next running of the Boston Marathon

The BAA announced today that God, Covid-19 and Gov. Baker willing, it will hold the 2021 Boston Marathon on Columbus Day - Monday, Oct. 11.
Officials emphasized the date is still subject to cancellation, like the 2020 and April, 2021 races. In a statement, BAA President and CEO Tom Grilk said:
We announce the 2021 Boston Marathon date with a cautious optimism, understanding full well that we will continue to be guided by science and our continued collaborative work with local, city, state, and public health officials. If we are able to hold an in-person race in October, the safety of participants, volunteers, spectators, and community members will be paramount.
Also, many details remain to be ironed out in case the race can be held:
In celebration of the 125th Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. will also offer a virtual race option. Additional details including field size for the in-person race, registration dates, safety measures and protocols, and participant requirements that will be in place will be forthcoming. The event plan will be pending future approval from the eight cities and towns that comprise the marathon route.

That we might actually be able to hold a race by then.
It's a good day for it. Avg high 63, low 48, record high 82. (Apr 15-21 is … 56/40 to 60/42, but with record highs ranging up to 94, although to be fair, the week around Oct 11 has seen temps as high as 90.)
Wind is less likely to be a headwind (data from here), so that's nice. And the sun is a lot lower, which means more on-course shade from trees and less solar radiation.
Not that I'd know anything about that.

These days, the trees still have leaves well into October - something they rarely have in mid-April.
Will it be a good day for it?
I've been running the half on that weekend since 2012, and there have been some nastily muggy races I've endured.
That said, better in October than not at all, and hopefully the weather will be perfect (50 degrees with relative humidity at 50 too.)

Was going to say at least that's a weekend where road racing is regularly scheduled- the Reebok (formerly Tufts) womens' 10K is also scheduled then- as opposed to the pie-in-the-sky mid-September date they wanted last year

It's also Chicago weekend on Sunday. Theoretically someone could run both Chicago and Boston. Many stupid points if you do that.

The BAA half will be rescheduled & the Reebok (FKA Tufts) 10k is "yielding" to the new marathon date.

Either way, they needed to "do something" proactive for an event of this size and importance rather than just wait for everything to be magically back to normal, so a tentative schedule looks better than nothing when the cautious bet would be for April '22.
Different weekend
But it could be a busy fall if everything goes well.
Quite possibly many fewer international runners. Maybe a somewhat smaller race. But the race org needs lots of $$ to put it on, so they can't really run it with 600 runners.
Much better idea than mid-September
which was the proposal last year, and which is still summertime. Let's hope Boston and the various suburbs can make it work.
