Pair drives car into Newbury Street store to steal stuff

WBZ reports Boston Police are looking for a man and woman for a heavy-duty smash-and-grab at the Chanel store on Newbury Street early this morning: They drove an Altima into the storefront, made off with bags, then got into another waiting car.

Reason #58042 to make Newbury Street pedestrian only. Want to make it harder for criminals to get away with murder, theft, etc? Make pedestrian only zones all over the city.

Hahahahahaha.

Even if you make Newbury pedestrian-only, your proposal assumes that crooks using a stolen car to ram a storefront would actually care that they're not allowed to drive in a pedestrian zone. And even in Europe, where pedestrian zones are far more common, vehicle access is maintained at off hours for deliveries.

You're also not supposed to drive an SUV into a parade, but that didn't keep a domestic terrorist from doing it in Waukesha.

...or erroneously labeling an angry man with a decades long violent criminal record and documented mental health disorders "a domestic terrorist"

Never gets old (or make any sense).

How'd that work out on Washington St? As if turning over that street to sate the privileged Twitter morons that call themselves "urbanists" will stop crime and murder.

Funny how you never see those clowns saying close off Blue Hill Ave to cars, amirite?

Must be easy to find a well dressed car that smells good.

I have to imagine that was a stolen car. Carjacked, maybe? Because this seems like a poor use of resources for something that could have been sold off for a decent profit. You can smash glass with things other than cars, after all.

(Maybe the glass was particularly durable?)

Or at all? That question got stuck in my head... I'm not an expert in car theft, or Altimas, but it seems like selling a stolen car is fairly difficult, and that much of the time when a car is stolen for profit, it's for parts, not for resale whole. At a glance from the news footage it looked like an older (10 years or more) model, so good luck selling that for parts; not like you can just cut it up with a blowtorch and sell it on eBay.

The glass being durable, and there being a lot of it, might be the reasoning. Also, anyone happened to be walking around there and saw a car driven intentionally drive into a store, they might think "Those mf'ers are crazy" and immediately walk away.

"Not my car" makes it a lot easier to decide to drive it through the window. To steal...a few handbags. Whose resale value is more than the parts of this car. And of course you didn't just show your ass on a bunch of security cameras.

Pretty damn stupid.
