Harvard station has falling-metal-things competition: The old Bayside Expo sign in Dorchester

The Dorchester Reporter reports a metal panel from the big old Bayside Expo sign, which advertises an expo center on Columbia Point that was demolished years ago, plunged to the parking lot below recently. No injuries.
The sign is now owned by UMass Boston as part of the Bayside property, on which a developer hopes to put a $5-billion complex called Dorchester Bay City.
The sign chunk fell onto a parking lot owned by Corcoran Jennison, which owns an office building - with tenants that include the Dorchester Reporter - and which has feuded with UMass for years about the state of the decaying Bayside sign.

I wonder if these incidents
I wonder if these incidents are due to deferred maintenance during COVID. People staying home over the past several years so companies are not putting resources into routine maintenance on public properties; and spending money elsewhere or just not spending at all.
COVID not required
Businesses or governments "not putting resources into routine maintenance" and "spending money elsewhere" is neither novel nor pandemic related.

Truth
Weather is a factor, and design and selection of materials have to account for that. It costs more to build with fasteners that won't rust out pretty quick, relative to the decades that you expect a big expensive installation/structure to remain free of that kind of problem. Architects who spec for the right stuff get overruled by everyone who's trying to squeeze a nickel.
