Moby Koi resurfaces in Jamaica Pond
By adamg on Sat, 03/25/2023 - 4:24pm
Yesterday afternoon, a bright orange koi lazily did circles in the water off the northern shore of Jamaica Pond, tailed by a couple of drabber koi that more closely matched the color of the water.
There have been koi in the pond for several years now.

Are koi considered an
Are koi considered an invasive species? Should they put some sharks in the pond to eliminate the invasive koi?
Nah
Yes, Koi are definitely invasive and it would be good to thin their numbers if we can. Sadly, sharks are too salt-intensive, even the ones that can survive temporarily in freshwater.
We need to bring in the real big scary freshwater fish for koi control, Alligator Gar or Wels Catfish. Gar would be more fitting, since they're native to some of the US, but nothing would make the anglers on the pond happier than fighting an absurdly huge catfish.
This has been a roundabout plug for Jeremy Wade's great show 'River Monsters.'
Two bull sharks
Let them roam in there for 3 days to clear out the koi. Then take them back to the ocean.
Freshwater sharks!
I had no idea. How exciting that would be. :-)

If it’s that easy to “remove fish” why not just remove the koi.
Another Jamaica Pond success
Another Jamaica Pond success story. Anybody spot the giant goldfish yet?

Now you know the reason for the swimming ban.
How big is it, and
how big do koi typically get in private ponds?
I'm terrible at estimating sizes, but ...
It was pretty big, more than a foot, maybe 18 inches.

This picture does not show any size but I have seen huge carp in the fens. At least 2 feet.
They grow to a size relevant to the space occupied
Tiny goldfish (also carp, like koi) in a 5-gallon aquarium will grow in accordance with food/water health, but upgrade to a 20-gallon aquarium and you have much larger goldfish. We had some goldfish that went from tiny 50-cent Woolworth’s fish to ~4-inch-long, 12-year old unflushable goldfish that had to be buried in the backyard when I was a kid. All about upkeep.
I’ve seen videos with koi as large as a beagle, but not in person. There are plenty on YouTube. It’s one of those things where you’re not sure if you’re impressed or put off.
