Sumner Tunnel closing affects leaf and yard-waste pickup in Boston
By adamg on Thu, 07/13/2023 - 12:16pm
The city hasn't forgotten to pick up leaves and other yard waste of late, it's shifted collection from alternate trash days to every Saturday in July and August, due to traffic issues caused by the two-month shutdown of the Sumner Tunnel for repairs.
The city, which composts much of the yard waste at a city yard on American Legion Highway, says the regular schedule will return in September.

Thank you!
Really appreciate this report! Was wondering why it wasn’t picked up yet this morning but hadn’t gotten around to finding out. Now I’m wondering why we didn’t get any kind of notice about this from the city.
It also says that the mayor
It also says that the mayor is an "MBTA commuter"
Get a new shtick
You and Magoo need some new material.
Leave ol' Magoo out of this.
Leave ol' Magoo out of this.
Shhhh!
If he who must not be named hears his name …..
Alas...
...he got here first.
You should probably start charging her rent
for all the space you're letting her take up in your mind for free.
I never knew
you could get to American Legion Hiway via the Sumner.
With practice, all things are possible
But maybe they're talking about getting leaves from East Boston and Charlestown (and South Boston, which would be affected by traffic from the tunnel closing) to American Legion.
Also, only two-thirds of the yard waste goes to American Legion. I don't know where the rest goes (anybody know?) but if it goes up to Saugus or Haverhill (like much of Boston's trash), that could obviously be affected by the tunnel closing.
Magoo sez
Drat and double drat. Magoo’s summer plans are doomed Magoo sez, they are dooooooooooooomed, for Magoo’s summer schedule completely hinges on cutting Magoo’s grass so Magoo’s poochy, Ms. Cutesy snuggles pooch pooch, can go tinkly on Magoo’s bitty lawn easily. With high grass Ms Cutesy snuggles pooch pooch has a hard time going tinkly and poopoo. Magoo.
American Legion Hwy WHERE?
How many City neighborhoods would need the tunnel to the greenhouse/compost yard in Rozzi?
This makes no sense to delay the entire City.
The silver lining
Instead of picking up every OTHER week (and sometimes not until the 3rd week), with the move to Saturday's they are now doing WEEKLY pickups. My barrels of fermenting grass clippings are usually pretty ripe by the end of two (or 3) weeks, so I welcome the weekly service.
