Somebody returns overdue LP to Jamaica Plain library - after 47 years

Jamaica Plain News reports on the overdue record - which BPL no longer had in its database, since it no longer lends out LPs. But, phew, no fine, since BPL no longer charges late fees.

What's the Title? It may be the one I've been waiting on to be put back in the stacks so I can complete my Report for Sister St Joe

It was Abbie Hoffman's little-known followup to "Steal This Book", a spoken-word album called "Borrow This Record From The Library For An Unreasonable Period Of Time".

Really pretty much as I would have guessed:

Excellent choice, I hope that 47 years ago, that record blew some kid's mind.

They thought they were going to have to use a Shotgun to get that record back.

Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y'know that little stamp, the one that says "New York Public Library"? Well that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before: Flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world, but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers? Doesn't he deserve better? Look. If you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld; maybe that's how y'get your kicks. You and your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy: Party time is over. Y'got seven days, Seinfeld. That is one week!

Understandable that this happens. Back in 1987 I didn't have a library card and I took a book I needed to write my term paper. Fast forward to a few years ago, cleaning out my old bedroom and there was the book. So it's been 36 years now. I'll drop it off one day when I'm back in the area again. I'm sure it's still listed as available in the card catalog.

I returned a Cable Box to the local Comcast Office in the town I grew up in a few years ago.

Why?

The cable box was from my 1st apartment in 1994 and I never returned the boxes. Back then the local cable co was "Warner Communications" (not to be confused with TWC). I had standard cable (35 channels) + the promo pack that gave you Cartoon network, Comedy Central, and VH1 + the HBO and Showtime pack. All of this for the low price of 33.50/mo + 1.95 because that box had a remote. (which I still had)

The lady looked at me like I had three heads handing her this 1990-era Pioneer analog cable box. When she told me that they didn't care and why was I returning it.

I said to her "because you're going to give me a receipt for it. I dont care that you're going to toss it, I just want the receipt to show I eventually did return the box 25 years later". She begrudgingly made me a receipt, took the box, and promptly threw it in the trash LOL

its a matter of principle. The library has long since forgotten about that book. But go return it anyways.

That's what cancelling late fees does.
