Transformer explosion forces evacuation of Lenox Hotel because of smoke

The Boston Fire Department reports a transformer explosion behind the Lenox Hotel at Exeter and Boylston streets around 12:30 p.m. filled the hotel with smoke. Firefighters went through the hotels evacuating all guests and employees as other firefighters installed fans to get the smoke out.

The department ordered a two-alarm response because of the need to evacuate the building.

And caused a big blackout in Back Bay along with smoke that made people wonder if Boston had been bombed?

I thought that one was closer to the Sheraton hotel. I have vague memories of being rerouted when trying to navigate through there to get to the Christian Science building parking lot. But that could be a mis-remembering.

Yes it was in the garage on Dalton Street. I worked in the Pru at the time and went in the next day to get something. A woman stopped me to tell me to avoid the area near Legal Seafood because all of the fish “melted”

Transformer explodes, fire rages, Back Bay goes dark.

That was a major neighborhood transformer, while the thing that blew up today was way smaller.
