Citizen complaint of the day: Maybe we need signs telling tourists not to steal bricks out of Beacon Hill sidewalks

Where a brick used to be.
A concerned citizen files a 311 complaint about the situation on West Cedar Street on Beacon Hill:
This is a new one for me: someone pulled a brick out in front of my neighbor’s house. All I can guess is it was taken as a souvenir.

One guess and souvenir is what you come up with? Maybe they live nearby and needed a brick for their own sidewalk or garden wall or to hold down important papers or to match the color for that one kitchen wall. So many possibilities.
There are missing bricks
There are missing bricks anywhere there are brick sidewalks. They pop out sometimes. Why assume it's theft if there's no evidence?

I don’t advise a sign prohibiting taking bricks ….
… as souvenirs.
It will just put the suggestion in some people’s minds and then it will become a thing. Like locks on bridges.
Maybe a sign warning not to touch the bricks as they may or may not be radioactive?

50 years ago...
When my landlord was still with us, he conveyed an interesting story to me. He was a bricklayer, migrated here from Italy. He would go to work downtown and as he would go down the sidewalks, he'd scuff the bricks and if they were lose, he'd set them aside next to the curb. On his way home, he'd ride along with one of the other guys in his crew and pick up all the bricks he set aside on his way in.
That's how he built his garage.
Is it true? I don't have any reason to say it isn't. I've always wondered if there's some obvious marking on the city's bricks that would suggest whether it's true or not though.
