Bird watchers flock to South Boston for look at tropical sea bird rarely seen north of the Caribbean

Brown booby in South Boston

Mary Ellen was among the bird enthusiasts who gathered on the beach between the Curley Community Center and Carson Beach today for a chance to photograph the brown booby that decided to head north for some time in the Hub.

The booby in action - look at that neck go:

Mary Ellen adds that some of the local tough gulls, apparently tired of dive bombing for fries at Sullivan's, tried chasing the booby off but he was having none of it - after doing some fishing for lunch, the booby returned to its newfound perch.

Booby seems to be warning the gulls they won't like him when he's mad:

Brown Boobies were incredibly uncommon on South Boston beaches 50 years ago, but we had polar bears!

Impressive job, Mary Ellen!

It was a fun joke when my birdwatching son drew boobies (blue-footed ones) and Great Tits (the bird kind) all over his high school book covers. I'll have to let him know that this unusual guest has landed in our urban spaces!

We were driving by yesterday and were stymied by the amount of people walking and looking at their phones. Figured it was a pokemon go meet up lol, this makes much more sense. Why were they all looking at their phones though?

Maybe looking for the latest reports from people who had seen the booby, such as eBird?

There's a fair bit of similarity between Pokemon Go and birding...
