Moped robber with a loaded gun proves no match for group of people determined to get the bike back, police say

Boston Police report officers had little trouble finding a suspect in a moped robbery yesterday: He was the guy being pinned to the ground by a group of people at Arcadia Park and Ditson Street in Dorchester's Fields Corner.

Police say Jayden Romao, 18, stole somebody's moped shortly before 5:30 p.m. The victim and his friends managed to track him down to the intersection near the Fields Corner T stop:

Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by a group of individuals stating that the suspect had a firearm.

Officers quickly placed the suspect into handcuffs and were directed to the side yard. Officers recovered a discarded firearm.

Officers were advised that the suspect had stolen one of the individuals moped, and they were able to track it down to that location. As the group approached the suspect, he reached towards his waistband. The group advised officers that they held the suspect down, and called 911.

The firearm was later determined to be a Taurus 6×4 with an obliterated serial number. The firearm was loaded with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine which was capable of holding thirteen rounds.

Romao was scheduled for arraignment in Dorchester Municipal Court today on charges of illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a loaded firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and possession of a large-capacity feeding device, court records show.

Innocent, etc.

Why wasn’t he also charged with stealing the moped?

But - the gun charges are more serious or more obvious, maybe?
