311 complaint of the day: Don't they know this is the City that Always Sleeps?

Hot-dog stand open in Eliot Norton Park at 2:45 a.m., if you can imagine

An outraged resident filed a 311 complaint about a hot-dog stand whose owner was selling hot dogs - and even cajun chicken - in Eliot Norton Park on the Chinatown/Bay Village line at 2:45 this morning:

How can it be legal to have a hotdog stand open after 3 am?

Someone wake it up.

Guess I didn't hit control-C hard enough to copy the complaint URL after I'd first pasted in the Google Maps link.

And it hardly looks like they're causing a ruckus. Looks quite orderly, in fact

Massachusetts' blue laws survived until 1992. Nearly all restaurants were closed between midnight and 6am, and everything was closed on Sundays. And that was kind of nice. Yes, it meant you had to do your shopping on Saturday because you couldn't on Sunday, but life was adapted to that structure, Sunday mornings were a beautiful time to be outside, and many people liked it. In terms of tyranny, I think that was pre-1992 lifestyle was kinder to the average resident compared to today's demands for 24/7 availability of everything.

In the 32 years since 1992, no Massachusetts resident has been forced to go shopping on Sunday.

I mean, God forbid someone who had a few - legal BAH or no - stops to eat something and sobers up a bit before heading home!

Especially when the MBTA is asleep.

Doesn’t seem like this creates a lot noise. But if the smell and smoke were coming in my window, I’d be mad, especially if I was trying to sleep. That park is not big and is surrounded by housing on 3 sides.

I saw this after the Tedeschi Trucks Band concert at the Wang center. If I had been hungry enough, I would’ve grabbed a hotdog!

Depends on what he's charging.

I went to a Sox night game on a Saturday, my first one back since I moved away. I saw a hot dog cart on Lansdowne after the game. The guy wanted $15. I (expletive) you not.

For a simple hot dog? God knows what he charged for a sausage. This is why, for the last four or five years, I've generally avoided eating out and avoided food concessions at sporting events. I eat something when I get home. I live near a great bar and grill(in Newton), a place that has great food, and I'll be there tomorrow night to drink beers and watch the Bruins, but I rarely get food now, since not doing so saves me $15-20.

I'd rather see food sold than prostitution and crack.

up

When have you seen prostitution and crack sold in this place?

up

… drug deals here. Don’t know what kind.
I don’t see much street prostitution anymore. It’s a rather tame spot otherwise even late at night. Mostly rough sleeping.

This is gentle, docile, gentrified Boston, not Queens.

I'd be quite upset about that.

Personally I'd get really upset if they were selling plutonium.

Unless you lived there.

windows at South Cove Plaza abut and face the park.

0245 is the wee hours, people want to sleep. You know that stand attracts the loud inebriated.

This is not a long-established pre-existing nuisance like the Lith club, and it's running later than the Lith club.

As part of the permitting process for food carts hours of operation have to be established in writing before a permit is approved. As long as this guy has an approved permit there is no rules stopping him from operating in public parks in Boston for whatever hours were approved.
