As kids pick up back-to-school supplies at Almont Park in Mattapan, somebody starts firing a gun; nobody injured, suspect arrested

Boston Police report arresting a Randolph man with a loaded gun moments after gunfire last night near Almont Park - where volunteers were busy giving away backpacks to BPS students for the coming school year.

It's the latest in a series of gun-related incidents this year in and around the park, which have included a murder on Almont Street a week ago.

According to police, officers responded to the area of 25 Orlando St. on a report of gunfire around 8:30 p.m.

Police say that officers "observed a large group in a private parking lot" at 25 Orlando:

As Officers approached the group, officers observed a vehicle with all of its windows open, with a male occupant inside the rear passenger seat. The male, later identified as [Garfield] Williams, exited the vehicle and began to walk away as Officers approached the vehicle. Officers had a clear view into the vehicle and observed the muzzle of a firearm, wrapped in a piece of clothing and protruding from underneath the seat. Officers were able to place Mr. Williams into custody without incident.

The gun was "a Taurus 9mm handgun loaded with three rounds of .380 ammunition and eight 9mm rounds in the magazine.

Williams, 38, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a large-capacity firearm and carrying a loaded firearm, police say.
