BPS won't rule out new job for ex-headmaster convicted of punching his wife in the stomach

The Globe details how School Superintendent Carol Johnson did nothing after then O'Bryant co-headmaster Rodney Peterson pleaded guilty to domestic violence and applied for a new job in Memphis - and may have promised to keep that up as long as news didn't leak out (which it did). But the kicker to the whole thing is in the very last two paragraphs:
He is now looking for work, and a School Department spokesman said that if he applied for another job in Boston, he might return.
“The superintendent believes he has great potential as a school leader, so she wouldn’t rule it out,” said Boston school spokesman Matthew Wilder.

Nothwithstanding his checkered history, his connection to Johnson has trumped everything. What you look like is now clearly more important than what you do. Terribly sad.
Not about race, but about Menino Hackocracy
Johnson's been loyal to Menino's agenda, and he's being loyal to her. Ditto for Johnson and the wife-beater. Once the pay grade gets above $70 or $80 thou, the rules change. Different standards apply. This violent jerk, Rodney Peterson, would probably have a hard time getting a job at Stop'n'Shop with his record, but he's a great fit for a high-level administrative job working with kids.
As always, Menino's incoherent response allows him to appear blameless, somehow both above and below responsibility for this outrageous situation. Frankly I bet he's the one who told Johnson that Peterson could stay "so long as the media doesn't find out."

Why We Have Rules
You can enforce them against the violent janitor and executive alike.
If having had a conviction like this is grounds for dismissal, he should be dismissed. A strong civil service system that operates on rules and not patronage will make that happen.

I've worked with him in the
I've worked with him in the past, he was good at his job, but they shouldn't let him back. No way will he have the respect of his staff or kids. It's too high profile and he needs to go elsewhere.
It's About Leadership
This is a sad state of affairs. It is all about leadership. The superintendent has made some bad choices during her tenure. Bad choices at the English High School and bad choices at the O'Bryant. There are other examples that we may be hearing about in future articles. It may be time for a change for the sake of the students.
Did she deserve it?
No one is asking that.
