No Ashmont train service on Saturday

The MBTA announced today the Ashmont branch of the Red Line will be closed on Saturday so workers can remove one of those slow zones - and to make sure there aren't any potential problems left over from the Peabody Square lake that formed last week after a National Grid crew cracked open a BWSC water main there.

Trains will be replaced by shuttle buses - like for the previously announced shutdown of the Braintree branch - which will remain closed on Sunday.

For an organization that’s keen on improving its PR and reducing unforced errors there’s not a lot of practical quality control in training and procedures for improving the experience of the less than fully abled and connecting us to shuttles. It’s like the political system has us by the short and curlies over there behind the eight ball. Every election is an existential threat, so we can’t vote out the incompetent and corrupt.

Now that I live on the other side of the bridge at the end of Mattapan Square it's an easy hop to take the High Speed Line to Ashmont and transfer to the Red Line to get to South Station and take the Commuter Rail to Attleboro. I was supposed to go last Saturday but the rain changed my mind. Now I'll have to go to Forest Hills Station instead.

Anyone know how you get on the Commuter Rail at Forest Hills without a ticket? Can the conductors issue you a round trip ticket or will I have to go to Downtown Crossing and walk down Summer Street to South Station?

There's an entrance on Cummins Highway about 1/4 mile west of the square. The trains arrive every 1/2 hour (after 8:00) at around 6 and 36 past the hour on Saturdays.

I don't know if there are fare machines at Mattapan Station - if so I think you can buy commuter rail tickets from them.

(If you still need to go to Forest Hills you can get the commuter rail tickets from the fare machines there.)

Also, with a credit/debit card you can use the mTicket app to buy a $10 Weekend Commuter Rail pass.

I had no idea you could get commuter rail tickets from the Charlie Card machines! I've only used them for monthly updates and adding cash to my card. I'll double check later this morning.
