Here's the deal: I wasn't looking for an ad person. A mutual acquaintance in the online-media business, somebody I've known for quite awhile, and with whom I worked on a project last year, connected us - he recognized I probably should be looking for an ad person and that Ron was looking for a new challenge in the local online sphere. We met, hit it off, agreed to terms and that was that.

Had I been conducting an active search, yes, I would want to interview lots of people.

Sorry you're so bitter about everything I do. It must be a heavy burden on you watching my every step.

Adam I'm a bad user, I have a Mozilla plug in that suppresses ads. (Boston.com and its annoying hover over ads is what caused me to start to use one).

So I've never seen an ad, so I disabled it to see the Online Buddies one on here because I haven't had a good laff today.

Seriously?!? Advertising for jobs. I find it funny at what the unemployment rate is today, that companies have to resort to PAYING for ad space to find applicants. Either the company is stupid and doesn't know the workforce today... or the company just sucks to work for and any local who hasn't lived under a rock for the past 10 years knows to stay clear of this place. (between what their REALLY do for a business, or just the high turnover rate)

And my comment isnt reserved to Online Buddies, I feel the same way about any company that has to *pay* for advertising must have something wrong with it. Its rare companies are hiring that many people where they need a far broader reach than the standard channels to find applicants. ITA software was the same way.. tons of ads.. anyone actual WORK there? :)

As somebody who works in the recruiting field for a software company, I still have to advertise to find good talent (online banner ads aren't all that expensive). Funny how there aren't enough Java developers or good sales people out there. In general, unemployment of tech people is less than half of that for the population as a whole.

The jobs they have posted are good technical jobs and it pays to advertise to let people know that you are hiring when you aren't a household name. It is also a little tougher to find talent when there are some (many?) who might not be comfortable working on Manhunt or in the M4M environment (or who understand it, if that's a requirement for the job). If it were as simple as getting warm bodies, then they wouldn't need to advertise much.

Technical jobs, which is mostly what they're advertising, are a bit different than other jobs - even in this environment, they're harder to fill.

Plus, they're supporting a local business (i.e., me), so yay! And hopefully, their ads are getting them some candidates they might not otherwise have gotten (and yes, feel free to discount what I'm saying, since obviously we have a financial arrangement, albeit, on the grand scale of things, not a very large one).

Congratulations! It seems that if you build it, they will in fact come.

Bravo to the both of you, and here's hoping UHub will make great big stinkin piles of money (and inspire hope in a cash-positive future for online-only homegrown local media).

I confess, now that I spend a shocking percentage of my time bumbling through Ad Sales 101, I have the most Cinderella-esque dreams of tall, dark, handsome ad people riding up on white horses to rescue me from my own doofusness. And, my God! It could happen!
