I have sat on a jetty watching them pacman a school of minnows. These fish are eating machines!
If he was there a little longer, however, the seagulls would have moved in. Perhaps Mike Ross can invent something so that you can cast bread upon the waters and make sure the fish eat the loaves?
Man, a school of blues is like piranha. They've got a mouth full of sharp teeth you don't want to get near. There is no way I'd want to fall in the water in the middle of a school of blues. Might be a great way for a mob killing.....
Look at that video. An urban harbor in which you can see several feet down, which is safe for swimming most days, and which is teeming with sea life (my favorite was the whale who was hanging around the federal courthouse a couple of years ago). It is truly a success story.
It is also an example of why we need more, not fewer, quasi-public authorities (unless and until we get a legislature that is actually interested making things better for all, not just being re-elected). An agency of the Commonwealth could never have accomplished what MWRA has. An agency of the Commonwealth could not have rebuilt (with remarkably little fanfare) an entire international airport as Massport has.
I won't beat my dead horse any harder than that, but again, most of the major infrastructure successes around here in the last few decades have been accomplished by the quasi-public authorities, not the state, and that is not, in my opinion, a coincidence.
Feeding stripers, or any other fish for that matter, bread is going to kill them. Ask any marine biologist and they will tell you this is not good for them. Other morons who try this after seeing the video are doing the striped bass a disservice.
What's a better choice if you want to go feed the fish? I imagine a can of sardines would be worth a try. But is there something cheap and easily portable that's a good choice? Frozen peas?
Their existence is a result of their ability to a.) breed and b.) locate their own food. Human intervention in these two activities, particularly for a stable species, is unnecessary. If you want to help them, volunteer with one of the organizations that cleans the Charles.
Come on. There are over 200 million Atlantic striped bass over 1 year in age in the world. Feeding even a few hundred of them in Boston harbor is not going to destabilize the species. Yeesh.
Someone find me a marine biologist who has actually studied fish dietary restrictions. There is nothing inherently harmful about bread that is going to hurt a fish.
Most information I've found online telling you not to feed bread to fish has the same hoaxy or misinformed crap that you hear about "expanding in their gut" (total bullshit, bread doesn't dangerously expand when you get it wet it just looks like it as it dissolves) and yeast being dangerous (all dead from the cooking). Overfeeding fish is overfeeding fish, doesn't matter if it's bread or not. Training fish to just become food beggars from tourists puts them at risk of becoming too dependent on a particular food stream. But there's nothing about the bread that's itself harmful.

As a childrens book...
"Make Way For Rockfish Larvae" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Voracious!

for the bread, not the fish, right?
presumably, the gulls would have moved in for the bread, not the stripers. I think that those stripers would have kicked a gull's tail feathers.
Bluefish even more

Jokes on them
After about a week, he'll be back with his last loaf of bread and a landing net.
This gets shared.
Catch of the day already in the G Plus Stream. Thanks!!!
Headline I like to see...
Man feeds fresh, grilled striped bass to Costello
What a difference 25 years, a court decision and a quasi make

Alternatives?

Don't feed wild animals!

Food
Um, maybe something they eat in the wild..........sea worms, herring, squid, sand eels, lobster.
Go to Legal's and ask them.
No it isn't

Yes, and no
In some areas, feeding too much white bread to ducks and geese has caused nutritional deficiencies.
Fish? I doubt it is an issue.
