Brit journos seek non-gritty photos of Boston

The Guardian takes note of our gritty portrayal in most recent movies and says it's looking for photos showing our non-gritty side, such as:
Whether visiting the Back Bay neighbourhood, checking out the city’s transport or cheering on the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, share your images and experiences of the city.

Don't give them free photos.
They have a budget, they can pay the photographers. I myself only give photos to sites like Uhub.

fair point, for sure
I do think the Guardian Witness feature is a little less predatory/opportunistic than local news, for example, asking on Twitter if they can put people's pictures on air for free. It's strictly opt-in, and it's a way for people to share with a huge platform - one that may not be able to explore a little hamlet like Boston, say, in any particular depth - the home they know and love.

The Guardian and Boston grit
They got Joe Queenan to ponder why Boston is always so dark when portrayed on film (even as the author admits we have to consider such works as Ted and Ted 2, never mind "Legally Blonde," which he ignores).
His basic points about Hollywood's love of the enclaves of South Boston and Charlestown are true, if not exactly novel.
But his pretending to know more about Boston than he really does - and his insistence that everybody in America except "a few dissolute cowboy shut-ins wasting away out in Wyoming" knows as much about South Boston as people inside 128 - is kind of grating.
Despite what he writes, the busing violence was in the 1970s, not the 1960s (and it didn't involve "the federal government’s desegregation program," but rather a single judge, which is hardly the same thing); a new editor of the Globe might be reading "The Curse of the Bambino" not just to learn about Boston but because it was written by a Globe sportswriter (also, dude, the curse lasted 86 years, not 85); Bostonians might not put "Love Story" on a list of Boston-based movies because Cambridge is, in fact, a whole different city (to use a metaphor he might understand: It would be like saying a guy who lives in Westchester is a New Yorker). But maybe I'm just cranky.

I tend to think that the Brits understand us better than Queenan, who's apparently based in New York, the Donald Trump of states.
Also, for those who know my namesake, this rant takes place just outside The Guardian's offices, after MP Nicola Murray has just mistakenly revealed a massive government mistake to a freelance journalist. Good times. NSFW language.

I think that the first pic on the link is misidentified, unless it was taken during a flood. It looks like the Frog Pond in front of Charles St, with the new Ritz neighborhood in the background, and the old Ritz behind the photographer. I don't think you can see any of the Boston Common.

However, you are correct that the picture does not show the Common at all. It is indeed the Public Garden. As for the body of water, I think it is simply "the lagoon," without any additional name. The Frog Pond is where kids wade in the Summer, and people of all ages skate in the winter. It is on the Beacon St. side of the Common.
