European visitor enjoyed Boston area; now health officials sound warning because person had measles

State public-health officials have released the itinerary of a European visitor to the Boston area earlier this month and say anybody who might have been in the same area at the same time as this person might want to check with their health-care provider because that person came down with measles.

The locations include the Cambridgeside Galleria on the afternoon of May 1, the 1 bus that morning and the Green Line later that afternoon and the Star Market at the Pru and the Nespresso on Newbury Street on the afternoon of May 4.

Officials say this is the state's first measles case this year.

Those who think they may have been exposed to measles should immediately confirm that they have had two doses of MMR vaccine or have laboratory evidence of immunity to measles. Those without immunity to measles should contact their healthcare provider to get a dose of MMR vaccine as soon as possible. People born in the US before 1957 are unlikely to be susceptible to measles, but may consider getting a dose of vaccine. Young infants, pregnant women, and those with severe immunocompromising health conditions who may have been exposed are at particular risk and should contact their healthcare providers as soon as possible. A medicine called immune globulin may be given to help modify measles. Those who are unable to get vaccinated and have no other proof of immunity may need to refrain from all public activities for up to 21 days after the exposure to avoid spreading the infection.

That travel pattern has all the hallmarks of going to London and only going to Leicester Square and Oxford Street with a side trip to some suburban shopping mall.

Maybe the measles just wanted to retain some sense of dignity and just wanted to get the hell off of that person has fast as they could and had to settle for the food court at Cambridgeside as a way to avoid going to Wrentham?

They could have been here on business. Those are the public places they visited while not working. Because while at work, there is a controlled number of people who are easily contacted. It is only the public interaction that isn't controlled.

John, if you came from across the world you wouldn't try one of our finest dining establishments like "Panda Express"?????

It did make me wonder though about Wrentham because I go there every once in a while and it is filled with foreign speaking people for reasons I could never figure out. At first I thought it might be some Quebec residents stopping in on their way to Florida or the Cape, but I now think the outlets must have some sort of international advertising or something.

For Europeans Wrentham is ridiculous. During the Celtic Tiger my aunt would fly in with 5 or 6 of her friends and fill a van with clothes, handbags, and the lot. My cousin should have got a special medal or something for dealing with them.

Cheap to fly from Shannon, stay with relatives or at a cheap hotel, spend a day in Manhattan, and then have all your Christmas shopping done at Wrentham. You get a vacation and your shopping done, which, as I notice as I get older, is the life force behind many middle aged women.

Also, despite Maine's 7% tax and until the Loonie took a hit with the fall of oil prices, Bangor ME was going through a retail boom with people from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick coming to shop.

(Like to another country)

TJMaxx and Marshalls has the exact same stuff for cheaper prices. You aren't getting any great deals at those outlets.

Stuff is much cheaper over here. It's also of much worse quality and doesn't look as great, but it's cheaper, especially with sales.

I've, however, learned to do my shopping the opposite way - spend more on a more expensive item and have it be of much higher quality and last longer.

Yup! This:

is really the way to go, if and whenever possible.

"European" had been "Middle Eastern".

It would have looked like the Herald here.

According to the Globe, the Nespresso Cafe was forced to close by Inspectional Services (article does not specify when), and will be allowed to reopen Saturday. I'm not sure how helpful the public announcement is - should anyone who rode the #1 bus or the Green Line that day consider themselves at risk?

Could they be more specific?
