For sale: 20 acres of waterfront property
By adamg on Thu, 01/25/2018 - 2:19pm
The Dorchester Reporter reports that UMass Boston is looking to sell the 20-acre site where the Bayside Expo Center used to be. UMass bought the land for expanding its campus but now hopes to use the money it'll earn from its sale just to shore up its existing buildings.

Hmm.
If Somerville is game, Dorchester is game
That Is A Lot Of "Student Housing" Developers
There are some really good development teams that have responded to that RFP's for the site.
Samuels is the company that has transformed Fenway from where you get your McDonald's to where you go to Target. They were also the company that originally built out South Bay, when everyone thought they were daft to do it. They do good work.
There are a lot of student housing developers on that list. These are companies that build and maintain private dormitories either on school properties or on the periphery. They don't build the Four Seasons but they also don't build places like Southwest at UMass Amherst. The ones they have in schools in the South and Southwest of the country emphasize the "lifestyle experience" of a private dorm. Rents are per bed, and not unit. Their marketing makes college look like you are in a Kardashian level show on E. That is kind of not what UMass Boston was set up for, no?
Let's hope something sensible gets built there.

Soccer?
Wasn't that area one of the contenders for a soccer stadium until UMASS didn't want to sell them a sliver of that land?
Sorta
UMass started talking to Kraft about putting his downtown soccer stadium concept there. They didn't tell all the Important People about it. Then, when the idea was run up the flag pole, the Important People and the NIMBYs all cried foul and UMass dumped the idea.
NIMBY's - Depends on your persepective
Drop Bob Kraft a line down at One Patriot Place and let him know that you want a 24,000 seat concert venue in your neighborhood, would you?
Actually, yes
One of the many potential locations was in my hood, and I would certainly enjoy it.
Walk to Revs games and free concerts from my porch?
Yes, please!
They Made one Big Mistake
They did not promise John Fish any exclusives.
The Revolution will never
The Revolution will never leave Foxborough.
Correct. Gillette Forever. Fairmount to Gillette
Rev fans have a better chance of extending one Fairmount train to Gillette for games than getting a new stadium in Boston. The Midnight Riders & Rebellion should get on it.
