Topless women painted with corporate logos provided entertainment at recent biotech-show party

BioCentury reports on the topless dancers at a party at Royale for the recent BIO conference here in the Hub. While some were shocked and disgusted, one of the organizers said people should get over themselves, because the party is known for being "edgy and arty" and nothing says edgy and arty like half-naked women bearing corporate logos.

but I've known plenty of morally bankrupt drug dealers that love nothing like a good strip joint.

Or at least wive's and kids they love.

They sell weed, they're not amoral.

Was there a point to your post?

That was really too subtle for you? Seriously?

Here's a link to the letter from Stayer-Benton minimally edited (in red) onto the 2016 letter by Kate Bingham and Karen Bernstein:

I don't get it... why go into the nightclub? It's not like any serious discussion is going to happen in a dimly lit room with music blasted at 90 dB.

This is not relevant to my needs.

Some pictures of the subject would help me judge whether this was done in poor taste or socially acceptable. A picture is worth a thousand words!

Don't be a prude.

This isn't prudishness - this is a clearly inappropriate message to working women that they are either invisible, unimportant, or kept around for sex.

How better to remind conference attendees that mother nature is the best pharmacy and the antibiotic benefits in especially colostrum breast milk.

There is nothing "edgy" about using women's bodies to advertise unrelated products: that's been a standard capitalist technique for a very long time. (Maybe you disapprove, maybe you approve, but it's not new or challenging.)

bottomless men painted with corporate logos join the party.

That'd be the cue for everyone to call it a night.

Gay guys might hang around. Most people will split.

It's like dick pics: If ladies wanted to see your junk, Playgirl would outsell Playboy.

This Biotech Party was brought to you by the fine folks at Oscar Mayer.

I tried that back when I used my birthday suit as a billboard at processed meat conventions. Unfortunately, due to . . . let's say personal limitations, I could only get the "Osc" part of their logo on there, so I had to refund them a good portion of their payment. They were nice about it though.

If Boston wants to pretend it's a real city, it also can't pretend that this is news.

...which half of your statement was the dumbest part.

That's outrageous that these women were forced to dance topless!

There's nothing wrong with people being naked for money, but when you hire such performers for an industry event, you're promoting a workplace environment which not everyone is comfortable with, and in particular at atmosphere which is going to disproportionately make women uncomfortable.

Thank you. All these people are missing the point. When this is an official part of the industry activities, it sends a message to any women who are working in the industry, "this is what you have to put up with, if you want to network / be accepted / get ahead".

Have you ever been inside Royale nightclub? It's a place you go for networking events, unless your networking goal is getting laid.

If this happened at a trade show exhibition floor, then it would be a different story.

have you ever been to a convention or conference? you do your suit wearing, business card trading networking on the floor during the day, and then you go out socializing with new contacts and get less structured face-to-face friendly time. this is how real business relationships are formed, the kind of unspoken "oh yeah, I know brian, he's a good guy, we should get him in on this" ones that have historically locked women and POC out of advancing. it's like going golfing.

this was part of the events, it wasn't like a handful of biobros went and crashed latin night with the general boston nightclub community and somebody was mad there were people grinding

It's important to reinforce the concept that Bio is just one big Bros Club. Message received. sigh.

Since event planners had decided to go the trashy route, they should have painted corporate logos on naked men too.

Sooooooo edgy and arty! https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/30/health/drugmakers-lawsuit-insulin-dru...

If they didn't kill people by controlling the prices of a medical commodity well out of patent, they couldn't have painted titty parties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As one said previously in the comments, "Capitalism."

You know, when I want to get a few gratuitous shots of scantily clad women with comments as ribald as ole Hugh Gaffin here provides, why the fuck would I go to The Chive?
