Maybe we'll see this correction in the Globe tomorrow

The Globe today posted a fun profile of the South Street Diner. So it pains us a bit here at the nitpick desk to report that the second half of the headline, "I spent the night at South Street Diner, Boston’s only 24/7 sit-down spot," is wrong.
The City that Always Sleeps has two sit-down spots open 24/7 - the other being the IHOP on Soldiers Field Road in Brighton.

The good news is
The article did not appear in today’s newspaper, so they should have had time to edit it before tomorrow’s edition (the one with the food section) goes to press.
Of course, if they had editors on the digital content side, you wouldn’t have been able to hype the article. I look forward to reading it come breakfast time (and hope the print edition still has editors.)

Ran with the same tag line in print, and page A2 did not mention any correction.
The old Blue Diner
I used to go to the Blue Diner (the earlier incarnation of the South Street Diner) when I worked near there in the early 80s. Back then it was just a regular place, it wasn't a "thing" or an "icon". No velvet ropes, no outdoor heaters. No articles written about it. I'm not even sure it was open all night back then. I used to get the "End of Pike Special", two cheeseburgers, fries and a coke for $3.50.
And Trump only pardons wealthy Republicans...
The correction desk will be busy. Ex-Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) is a proud, lifelong Democrat. It's unclear if Alice Marie Johnson, the African-American grandmother who was serving life without parole for a first offense drug trafficking rap is a Democrat but she's hardly a wealthy, well-connected Republican. His wife was smart enough to keep going on Fox News to plead for a pardon, and we know how much the president enjoys Fox News telling him what to do.

Another factor that Trump admitted in his half-English gibberish- Blago was convicted by a special prosecutor appointed by Comey. Like how Trump decided anything Obama did had to be undone, he now seems determined to reverse anything Comey did regardless of facts or reality.

Numbers don't lie
Trump has pardoned 29. Obama is his 2 terms did almost 2,000. And don't forget that prison was a good place for Blago to get the Whitey Bulger/Jeff Epstein Treatment. He knows A LOT about Chicago. Maybe too much. (Unless the Obama Administration has nothing to hide, as they claim?)

Wow you're right, trump clearly is the bipartisan leader we always hoped he'd be. What a great day for our country that a bunch of rich white men that made thier fortunes through ripping off hard working Americans are now free. That right there is progress folks.

In fairness...
In fairness, the IHOP is about as far away from downtown as you can get.
Distance from downtown
I'd say anywhere in Lower Mills, Hyde Park, Readville, Mattapan, or West Roxbury is further from downtown (and still within Boston city limits)
And for people without a car,
And for people without a car, that IHOP might as well not exist, especially during overnight hours. Very few people live within walking distance, and the 64 bus doesn't help much.
And for people who don't live downtown and are carless
The South Street Diner and IHOP are both inaccessible at 3 AM.
Or bikeless
There are a pretty large number of people who could bike a short distance to South Street Diner (either on personal bikes or on Blue Bikes). Biking to IHOP in Brighton is not for the faint-hearted, though I've done it once or twice.
But many more people live
But many more people live within walking distance of downtown. Or are likely to be out for a night on the town there.
IHOP Harvard Square
is not 24 hours, but is the next best thing, closed only between 4 am and 7 am. Much easier to reach than the Brighton IHOP, whether by subway, bus, foot, or bicycle.

I have lived here since 1979 and I am only now learning there's an IHOP in Harvard Square?!? It's such a small storefront I guess I've just overlooked it. How long has it been there? Is it a full-size, regulation restaurant with lots of seating, or some kind of mini express concept? I promise I won't blame you for the five pounds I am about to gain.
It's a real IHOP
It's not huge by the chain's usual suburban standard, but it is a legitimate sit-down restaurant.
Years ago, there was another 'urban' IHOP storefront in Kenmore Square, torn down for the Hotel Commonwealth.
I've eaten there, and the one
I've eaten there, and the one in Revere, I enjoy fine dining. The Harvard Square location has so few people the few times I've gone there, I am surprised they can stay open, but it is a full size restaurant. The prices seem a little higher than the norm for IHOP.
The big question is....
...does IHOP have real maple syrup?
Anything other than real maple syrup is a waste.
2005/2006
a friend of mine was a waitress at south street in the mid 2000's. We'd go visit her on weeknights when he had nothing better to do at 2 am. Interesting scene then. Mostly hookers, off the clock strippers, and an assortment of weirdos. Struck me as the last vestige of dirty old boston.
We had to act as bouncers on a few occasions to throw out rowdy bums. Typically we were rewarded with a free plate of mozz sticks. That is a payment type i'll gladly accept to this date.
Anyways, a little later a guy came in an shot up the place, but missed everyone in the restaurant, which seems nearly impossible given how narrow it is. Tried to find the story about the shooting to link to, but no dice. My friend was working that night, quit a day or two later.
Late night place in Davis?
Does any one remember a place that opened at 11pm and closed at 5am? I went once when i first moved to Davis sq in 1996.
It was in an old house,with Floresent lights and stackable type function chairs ,in a big room, with I think terrible food, like toasted wonder bread.

I recall the Chinese place on
I recall the Chinese place on the College Ave. side of Davis that stayed open fairly late (past 2 on weekends?) about 15-20 years ago- smelled like manna walking past it after a number of drinks- ate there once and lost that sensation
On the Highland Ave side
Yee's Village in early 90s was great too with $2.99 plates to die for

Closed 3 or 4 years ago. Now a Thai (mostly take-out) restaurant.
South Street Diner in daylight hours ambiance
Is starkly different than at nite but you can't go wrong with:
1) grilled cheese
2) a cup of chili smothering an order of fries
3) burgers
But get it to go, otherwise your pores will demand an immediate shower...

The thing was written by a kid. Most likely not from Boston. Excuse the errors. Blame the Globe editors for not giving a shit. I’m sure South Street Diner’s PR company paid the Globe well enough for this article.

And yep, it's amazing that nobody at the Globe who knows that Brighton exists and is a part of Boston caught the error - which, really, would be easy enough to fix without changing the basic idea of the story one bit (so it's downtown's only all-night place, not all of Boston's). But maybe all their institutional memory now resides inside the Beltway.
