Former Councilor Consalvo files for run to replace Rep. Scaccia at southern end of the city

Wearing blue gloves and a mask, former City Councilor Rob Consalvo today filed signatures to get on the September Democratic primary ballot to replace 14th Suffolk State Rep. Angelo Scaccia, who is not running for re-election.
Gretchen Van Ness, who ran against Scaccia in Hyde Park, Roslindale and a small part of West Roxbury in 2018, filed papers back in February, when neither gloves nor masks were required to get into City Hall to file anything.
Consalvo, currently an aide to School Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, said that for now, he will concentrate on his BPS work - and that he and a small team of volunteers "practiced safe, social distancing" to collect at least the minimum required 200 signatures.
But, when the time is right, I look forward to a thoughtful and vigorous campaign and then, if elected, serving the residents of the 14th Suffolk District. I have always believed that government and public service is, and always will be, about helping people and making a difference in the lives of others. I will bring my commitment to public service, my wealth of experience in government, and my ability to build bridges and coalitions, to the State House to fight every day for the people of Hyde Park, Roslindale, Readville and West Roxbury.

I always found him really hard working, good common sense, showed up at every meeting and always responsive to requests for help. And trashing the microgreens people too? Who hurt you?
Curiosity got the better of me, current salary for a state rep. $62,500, city council salary 2006-2015 was $87,500. I may be mistaken here, but it seems his "high 3" already happened, being a state rep won't do nothing for his pension. Sorry, I call BS.

Here's a guy who has been living off the taxpayers his entire career and has spent the last few years as Walsh's guy in the schools keeping an eye on whomever the Super is.
I think that Rob has seen the writing on the wall and knows that Wu has a strong chance pf becoming Mayor and there goes Rob. I don't think he wants to take his chances in the private sector in the new recession.
And it's not like state reps can get laid off.

Rob is a decent guy and would hit the ground running as a Rep. The Hyde Park/Roslindale area needs someone who can get things done, not a Progressive/Activist type.
As for Michelle, she is a very nice person in person. However, she would be way out of her league running the City. There are some people associated with Marty who would starve in the private sector, but that happens in every administration. Hangers on very rarely go far. Marty should not be underestimated, and those who would replace him with a reformer should look before they leap.

The only people in politics who don't really like it are the types who decide to leave after a few years. That Scaccia lasted as long as he did was no surprise. I remember seeing him once at a bilingual mass. The Hispanic community does the "kiss of peace" to a much greater degree as the rest of the parish, wandering the aisles looking for people to shake hands with. Scaccia was truly in his element, glad handing all around (which is not to say he wasn't into spreading the peace, and for that matter he never really combined his religious life with his political life, the origins of his political stances notwithstanding.) Rob likes politicking, so of course he is willing to try for a Beacon Hill seat.
Don't really like... what?
There are lots of local politicians these days who like the concept of serving their communities and improving the world through government. There are still plenty who follow in the footsteps of people like DiMasi who are in it for their own benefit, accrued through proximity to power. Frank Baker, Mike Moran - those types. They like politics for very, very different reasons than someone like Wu.
Wu has goals, ideas and an idea of how to get them done. Rob is happy to shake some hands, kiss some babies and collect a paycheck. The difference is the impact, not the intent.

Wu has pie in the sky ideas without concrete plans as to how to pay for them.

Wu is a proven progressive who knows the game. If and when she becomes Mayor, I would expect she'll dump as many of these old school ward heels in the Hall as quick as possible.
That's why Rob is running for this seat.
Wu might have had a chance
Wu might have had a chance against Walsh but not now that Boston is weathering Covid-19 better than most places under his leadership. Try again in 2025.

“Progressive” or else wise, most politicians at a lower level are motivated by the same basic thing- helping people. The particular means is how the political spectrum is populated.
Rob is running because he misses what he did on the City Council, even though the City Council does very little.

I’ve known Rob a long time and can assure you that it’s not about the money/pension. Rob truly believes in public service. No one works harder at trying to help people more than Rob so either your misinformed or just sour about something.

Name recognition
Consalvo is likely to be the only name most voters will know who is running for that seat when they go to the polls and vote for him. Plus, he’s a Menino guy and Tom Menino is probably the most popular politician in Boston, even though he’s been dead for 4 years.

People might also recognize his relative, Angelo Scaccia. No need to find people to work for him. Angelo has a machine all set up.
