Update: Building owner apologizes, sends crew out to wash the ads away.

Way to make an impression with the neighbors: Several disgusted citizens filed 311 complaints today about the gauche way 28 Exeter at Newbury advertised it has flats to rent - by spraying stenciled ads on the sidewalk of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall. The building went up in 1979, so you'd think the owners would know how their ads would be received in the Back Bay.

Wow. And I thought it was annoying when buildings along the Common used lights to project images onto the sidewalk.

The company in question helped themselves, temporarily, to something that wasn't theirs to take.

Someone who, without your permission, takes your car from your driveway, drives it around for the afternoon, and then returns it, should be let off, because the theft was only temporary?

So it’s petty theft, not grand theft....

What astounds me here is that a rich landlord has just helped himself to something of yours —- admittedly a very small something, maybe no more loss of value to you than, say, someone walking by your table while you’re eating at a restaurant and taking a swig of your cocktail — and commenters on here are rushing to defend the landlord and saying that the people complaining about it are unreasonable.

If you’re gonna pick sides, why on Earth pick the one that is arguing that corporate interests ought to be allowed to help themselves to public property? What’s in that for you?
