Police say man wrecked his car at Readville train station, called an Uber, left his car there

Transit Police report that early Sunday, a man plowed into the cement-anchored sign at one of the Hyde Park Avenue parking lots at the Readville commuter-rail stop, called an Uber and then left the destroyed remains of his car behind.
Police say they tracked down the man and will charge him with leaving the scene of an accident.

Luckily for us
And unluckily for him, leaving the scene basically has the same penalties as drunk driving. If he only did damage to his car, he may get off, but I assume the sign has at least some damage, enough that he damaged the property belonging to someone else and could be charged.
And I guess that answers my question
of why it would be a crime to leave the scene of a one-vehicle accident.
