Pedestrian critically injured in crash across from South Station

A woman suffered possibly life-threatening injuries when hit by a large box truck at Essex Street and Atlantic Avenue around 6:30 a.m. The truck driver remained at the scene.

They have to change the signals
They have the green lights and the walk signals going at the same time so turning vehicles can’t move because of the wave of pedestrians. Then the fed up drivers get pissed because they sit through two reds and force the turn. Pedestrians are fighting against that and the cyclists/skaters who ignore all of the signals in general. It’s terrible for everyone. Praying she makes it through and recovers fully and the driver isn’t traumatized as well

So the fed up driver just attacked the pedestrian because they had been waiting a long time in the congested part of downtown? Drivers will continue to drive murderously until they start going to jail for hurting and killing pedestrians. I know the car lobby, like the gun lobby, won’t let that happen in america where no one ever bears any responsibility for their reckless behavior.

As a pedestrian and driver in that area I just know both sides and provided insight. Don’t do that

Neither a bike rider, nor a skater were involved in this crash, but you decided to go there anyway. There are some deep psychological issues behind bike whataboutism. Just stop.
There used to be a cop there directing traffic.
I once had the pleasure of seeing a Financial District d-bag ignore the cop & had said cop all up in his face. Good times.

Isn't that satisfying? I was once crossing the street near the children's museum, in a crosswalk, and this car barreled through, would have easily hit me if I wasn't in the habit of being very alert at that crosswalk. A cop spotted this, radioed ahead, and as I walked by a moment later and saw the car pulled over, I grinned and waved.

The fact that we exist makes it difficult for box trucks to avoid hitting pedestrians?
Drivers kill. Period.
Leave cyclists out of it. Cyclists don't kill and are seriously injured in crashes with pedestrians. Drivers kill and are not injured in crashes with pedestrians.
So sick of this nonsense. The only pedestrians I have come close to hitting are those crossing against the light.

Any observations on motorists blocking the box in the intersections here?
Because when I was walking to work outta South Station this week, I saw multiple intersections blocked by motorists, crosswalks blocked by motorists and a few motorists aggressively moving at pedestrians as the walked with the signal.

I drove past this shortly after it happened, there was only one cruiser on scene. scary stuff. apparently it backed up traffic all the way to the Pike. hope the victim will be alright.
Multiple cruisers/police
Multiple cruisers/police vehicles were on site through the morning. Accident recreation was there, the box truck remained in the middle of Atlantic for hours post accident until it was towed.
Crossing this intersection takes way too long…
… and requires too many stop and waits for another walk light. It needs to be red all around for motor vehicles so pedestrians, etc can go directly across the middle or to wherever they need to go.
Cops.
Not a permanent solution, but until road and technology changes are implemented.
Cops, waiving hands, blowing whistles, giving tickets, being cops on foot. Two cops about every 1/4 mile along with other traffic enforcement personnel.
Lots of great ideas that may work eventually. We need a solution now.

You want to convince people that they are not going to get away with it. Whatever "it" is.

This happens in countless intersections all over the city for that exact reason, motorists are convinced that they are going to get away with it.
And why wouldn't they be? Cops can't be everywhere and even if they are nearby, they ignore all but the most egregious infractions.

Its a question of logistics. A couple dozen cops at a handful of intersections isn't making a dent here.
But I'll meet you halfway, traffic camera's aren't getting implemented anytime soon. Its gonna take a lot more than a dozen cops, which was your point.

Camera enforcement.
2 cops every quarter mile is ridiculously unsustainable and not affordable. Electronic monitoring can be installed to scale. If our representatives care about life and safety, they will change the law.
