Neponset River an open sewer in Hyde Park and Mattapan
By adamg on Thu, 06/08/2017 - 12:33pm
The Bulletin reports the river has incredibly high levels of both the sort of bacteria usually found with human waste and toxic PCBs - which is why the owner of the shopping plaza on the Hyde Park/Mattapan line hasn't put in the riverside restaurant he once wanted to.

A very interesting article
That said, I was distracted by the name of the group that called the meeting, People of Hyde Park Want Equal Representation. Huh? Hyde Park has their own City Councilor and State Rep. Roslindale has neither (aside from Michelle Wu, who is at-large.)
PTSD
They are still in shock that Himself of Readville is no longer calling the shots.
Maybe mizspelleng wiz Steve Murphy (Check sharp eyed John Keith's Twitter Feed for the worst of it) can get away from destroying the legal recording protocols of the Registry of Deeds and jump back into the fray and get those poor underserved former East Dedhamites better representation.
That's unfortunate
I've spent plenty of summer days by that river. First time I saw a deer in Boston was along that river. Great group of people committed to clean up and accessibility over there. Hoping them and the river all the best.
Neponset River
Thank you for your kind words about the Neponset River clean up group. We are having our 6th Neponset clean up on September 23rd and are looking for volunteers to help us. Last cleanup we took out 15 Tons of debris from the River and the sides of the River, including 2 cars one had been in the Neponset River for 20 years the other for 40 years ..The number
plates were still on the vehicles.
Please ask your neighbors and friends to help us. THE. NEPONSET RIVER NEEDS OUR HELP. Also the PCB s are in the River and are not a risk for Finard Properties and their agenda for continuing to fill the Riverwoods shopping center..

A) Sewerage is being poured
A) Sewerage is being poured directly into the river? WTF
B) I do not have equal representation? Why not? Says who?
!!!
I don't question that the river has pollution or that people are dying from drugs, but goshdarnit, everyone in that story seems to be going just a little over the top!
In our bit of Roslindale...
... a few blocks from Hyde Park -- inspectors came and checked for improper connections to the storm water drainage system YEARS ago.
I found and reported at least three of them on the Malden River
I flagged two of them during routine water sampling, and found and reported another while kayaking.
Many of them are floored over and aren't found until there is a hydraulic leak or other spill that seeps through the flooring.
Recent heavy rain
Recent heavy rain can't be helping matters. I'm pretty sure I read at one point frequent heavy rains can flood the storm runoff systems and when that happens old connection link up to the sewer systems and it all goes into the water ways as it used to always do.
Permitted and not permitted
There are CSOs (combined sewer overflows) that are permitted to dump if they notify - and only infrequently. The EPA and MWRA and watershed associations are trying to systematically eliminate these, but they do still exist.
Then there are leaks and unpermitted dumps - like McLean hospital and others - that seep, weep, and leak sewage into the rivers and streams. Belmont was resisting fixing their problems and replacing some of their mains for fifteen years, but they recently signed a consent decree with the EPA after the Mystic River Watershed Association documented their rich human bullshit effluent for years and the impact on the streams and waterways, including the mainstem of the river.
Sounds like the Neponset watershed is in for a fight, but EPA Region 1 and the DEP will not be able to ignore this. There is contaminated land involved, no doubt.
A lot of volunteers are
A lot of volunteers are working to clean up the Neponset in Hyde Park, but some of the worst chemical pollution comes from far upstream.
