Motorcyclists ride along Marathon route in charity run

Danielle Johns was in Cleveland Circle around noon when hundreds of motorcyclists roared down Chestnut Hill Avenue and onto Beacon Street for the ninth annual Boston Motorcycle Marathon Ride, which benefits the Jimmy Fund.

Has ads for bulletproof biker vests with pockets for concealed carry weapons. And this event is supposed to be in appreciation of police? Color me confused. Also, glad that this high noise pollution event wasn’t near me.

If motorcyclists really were concerned about their safety, they'd be driving a Volvo instead.
Try it yourself.
Ride an electric motorcycle for a day, then take the same route on a gasoline engine the following day. The difference in awareness of surrounding vehicles is like night and day.
Lighten up
When I rode, my bikes didn't have headlights that came on when the bike started. I could tell when I'd forgotten to turn on the headlight, because after a short while, some car driver would pull out suddenly, inviting me to center-punch them. Car drivers often don't see bikes, and it's seeing them that saves lives. A car driver hearing a loud engine usually can't tell where the noise is coming from, until they see it. Given the propensity of drunk drivers to plow into the back of bikes, I wonder if having those strobey taillights the bicyclists use might save some lives.

By your own logic and mine, the loud pipes force a driver to be more aware and actively seek out the oncoming motorcycle. If the pipes were not loud, most drivers would continue on their merry, distracted way and side swipe or t-bone a motorcycle since, as you confirmed, no one sees us. Hearing a motorcycle at least gives us a greater chance to make it home in one piece.
It’s not just drunks who plow into the backs of motorcycles, and that’s an argument to legalize nationwide lane-splitting; we’ll save that debate for another post.
When did you last ride? My first was a ‘77 Ironhead and I miss that thing like crazy… I do not miss manual headlamp switches.

The dipshit who rides his loud motorcycle through my residential part of Roslindale only wants attention for his stupid bike, because he's a 'rebel'. The good news is that Harley is going bankrupt pretty soon as people who grew up aspiring to be the Fonz are aging out off of their bikes.

“Safety”
No one drives a car because it’s “safe.” Same goes for joggers, cyclists, skateboarders, boaters and so on. Life is one giant risk after another, so take precautions. I don’t ride like an asshole, split lanes or rev my engine at red lights to make sure it’s still running, but I’ll damn sure keep my loud pipes and auxiliary lights on.

Cheaper than running the damn thing. Probably easier, too.
Also, when a few hundred motorcyclists raise a few thousand dollars for the Jimmy Fund ($35 to ride, which includes lunch) the cops seem to work for free. Yet when several thousand people run the race and raise something like $30 million for local charities (yes, the charity runners raise a lot of money), including $5 million for Dana Farber, do the cops volunteer their time on Marathon Monday?
Imagine a world where the cops working Marathon Monday donated all their overtime to cancer research.

And I highly doubt those cops are working for free, and you have no apparent grasp on how much goes in to the police work for the marathon. If you are so concerned with the police charging OT, you could donate your money to cover it
