New Italian restaurant in Dorchester will have real Italian chef

The Boston Licensing Board today approved plans by Stefano and Tsedenia Kiros to open an Italian restaurant called Via Cannuccia at 1739 Dorchester Ave. in Dorchester - the former home of an Italian bakery.

The couple plan "a casual Italian restaurant," their attorney, Andrew Upton told the board. Stefano Kiros was born in Rome and went to culinary school in Italy, before going on a culinary journey that brought him to France, Greece, the Maldives, England and finally Boston, where he spent time as executive chef at Petit Robert Bistro and as a baker at Eataly.

Stefano will handle the cooking while Tsedenia will run the front of the house, Upton said.

The Kiroses applied for a beer and wine license. Board members agreed they qualified for one, but whether they get one depends on whether the city has any available. The number of alcohol licenses in Boston is limited by the state legislature.

Their new restaurant is in the space formerly occupied by the Zia Gianna Italian bakery.

Too bad we wasted a full liquor license on Frank Baker's brother's rarely opened coffee shop, this place sounds like it will be a welcomed addition to the neighborhood.

I have eaten some of Stefano's pastries; he is a crème de la crème chef! This is a blessing for Dorchester -or a curse if you are trying to stay away from those.

The previous business was much more than just a bakery. They had occasional dinner events, and the owner prepared dinner for take out. Gino Barbalace, who was the owner/chef of Caffe Zia Gianna, is also Italian, from Sicily. I know he had to deal with some anti-gay b.s. at one point. I hope that's not why he and his husband relocated to Savannah, where they just opened a B&B . He will be missed.

Where lots of lunch money was funneled to baseball and hockey cards instead of across the street at Spiro's.

It was also the place that stocked the hard to find Star Wars figures that somehow Bradlees overlooked in their stocking efforts.
